Hello All, We will proceeding with a planned upgrade of MySQL and PHP on our system. Due to the amount of servers that will need to be upgraded we will be doing our conversions 6 servers a week starting WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14TH. The first servers to be upgraded are listed below: battlezone.vosn.net centipede.vosn.net contra.vosn.net csx001.whspn.net csx002.whspn.net digdug.vosn.net
The PHP upgrade is to 4.4.5 which is a small security upgrade and should not cause any problems. The MySQL upgrade will see the installation of version to 4.1.21. This upgrade is necessary to stay current with the various bug fixes & security updates but also brings along some new features that some are sure to like. All of these upgrades are all part of the process to bring PHP5 support to our clients at a later time. With this upgrade, the default charset is altered on each database to use 'latin1' which may cause some websites using other defined charset's to display it's content incorrectly. Please open a support ticket with our staff if this is the case. Below is a list of some new features in this version of MySQL: - MySQL 4.1 supports subqueries. Many queries can be more efficiently written without using a subquery, but there are the exceptions, and subqueries are a standard ANSI SQL feature, so it's about time MySQL supported this.
- Supports Unicode (UTF-8), allowing for much more extensive internationalization. Different character sets can also be set per column, table or database, which could be necessary if the data stored is from many languages.
- Support for geographical data (OpenGIS)
- As if one wasn't enough, MySQL 4.1 can now send multiple warnings to the client (useful for bulk data processing).
- More minor speed improvements (probably counteracted by all the extra bulk MySQL 4.1 now carries - it's a bit early to tell whether these will be noticeable).
- Although the MySQL manual is one of the best manuals out there, MySQL 4.1 comes with a HELP command, applicable only to that version.
- Support for derived tables, for example:
SELECT table1.field1 FROM table, (SELECT * FROM table2) table3 WHERE table1.field1=table3.field1
- Support for multi-line queries, which allows you to run several queries, and then read the results afterwards.
- Various maintenance statements will be stored in the binary log, meaning you may be able to simplify your maintenance tasks when replicating.
- CREATE... LIKE allows you to easily create a new table with the exact structure of an existing table.
Once the above servers have been completed we will announce the next batch. We very well may take on more then 6 servers a week depending on support requests stemming from the upgrades. As always if there are any questions or concerns, please do let us know. Thanks! WebHSP Support Team. Note: This is for our shared servers only, VPS clients will not be affected.

Very good news, and hopefully the beginning to a slew of much needed upgrades! Hopefully other web hosting services follow suite, as Web HSP is very respected among the shared hosting community.

If possible, please do a full data backup as close to the upgrades as possible so that there would be the least loss (fingers crossed) Put your helmets on, and good luck

htperkins - Thank you for your kind comments, they are always appreciated. scanreg - All of our nightly backups on our shared servers are full backups, so in the event that disaster strikes, we are ready . There should be little need for the backups however as we have completed these upgrades on a few of our quieter servers and everything went off without a hitch. Fingers certainly crossed all the same. Regards, Mark

It looks like the server I'm on (not listed above) was previously upgraded to MySQL 4.1.21 but its PHP version is still 4.4.3.
Are we going to get the PHP upgrade in the future?

BassX, All of the servers will be upgraded. The servers mentioned above are only the first batch. Once they have been upgraded successfully and all issues (if any) that arise as a result have been dealt with, we will move on the the next batch. Breaking them down in this way will help to keep the process organized and on schedule. You will be notified by email prior to the upgrades. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thanks. --Kevin

Hello,
I'm on the csx001.whspn.net server and while I see that my PHP has been upgraded to 4.4.6, my MySQL is still 4.0.27-standard.
Also, since the upgrade I'm getting 403 and 404 error messages when I try to rebuild my index.html on my blog, informing me that I don't have permission to access its cgi. When I go into my cpanel file manager and edit my index.html there, the change appears on my blog at first, but then disappears and reverts to the index prior to my changes. I haven't altered permissions or anything either on my blog or in my cpanel and am able to use my blog otherwise. Since this has only just begun to happen, I'm led to believe it's related to the upgrade. Any assistance you could provide would be helpful.
Thanks!

Aravis,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. You are correct. The timing of the issue would definitely lead one to believe that the problem is related to the recent upgrade. I have not yet determined that to be the case, however, I'm investigating the problem now.
I will submit a trouble ticket on your behalf. You can expect to here back from me shortly regarding the matter.
Thank you for your patience,
WebHSP Support Team.
